Police believe distracted driving caused 4-car pileup in Washington City

WASHINGTON CITY, UT – A distracted driver reaching for a cellphone caused a four-car pileup in front of an elementary school in south central Washington County, St. George News reports.

The incident occurred in front of Majestic Fields Elementary School at about 3:40 p.m. on Wednesday, as school was letting out.

An elderly driver was heading west on Majestic Drive/3090 S when his cellphone rang and he reached to pick it up. This caused him to lose control of his Toyota Venza, which collided with the back end of a white GMC SUV driven by a woman who had just picked up her two daughters. The SUV was pushed into a Chevy Malibu, which rear-ended a gray Mazda.

Emergency responders took the Toyota’s driver to the hospital after he complained of chest pains, which police say may have been caused by his seatbelt or airbags. They cited him for improper lane travel and issued him a warning for distracted driving.

Fortunately, no one else appears to have been injured.
