Narrative
OREM, UT – A wrong-way driver from Provo died, and a police officer sustained serious injuries Sunday in a head-on crash along the interstate in northern Utah County.
The collision took place around 2 a.m. on the southbound side of I-15 in Orem, which is north of Provo and east of Lake Utah.
Police say that 26-year-old Natalie Munchgesang was driving north on I-15 southbound when Trooper Carlos Rios-Redd intercepted her with his police cruiser.
Rios-Redd suffered broken bones in the crash and required assistance exiting his vehicle, which caught fire after the collision.
Munchgesang died at the scene of the accident, and her passenger in the vehicle went to the hospital with critical injuries.
Officials closed the southbound lanes of I-15 until 9 or 10 a.m. while crews investigated and worked to clear the scene.
The investigation is ongoing.
